Subway

For British who come to China for the first time, please take note: Chinese Mainland does not call "Underground", but they call "Subway". Please do not say "Underground station" because the Chinese Mainland will not understand it.

Subway Trains

The subway is the fastest way, convenient and no traffic jam to get around the city except of course during rush hours (7:00-9:00 and 16:30-18:00) when they're very crowded.

There are 8 lines subway train now, which are:
Line 1: (From Ping Guo Yuan to Si Hui Dong, and from Si Hui Dong to Ping Guo Yuan)
Line 2: (Circle line; from Ji Shui Tan to others station, and back to Ji Shui Tan again)
Line 13: (Circle line; from Xi Zhi Men to Dong Zhi Men, and from Dong Zhi Men back to Xi Zhi Men)
Line 5: (From Tai Ping Zhuang Bei to Song Jia Zhuang, and from Song Jia Zhuang to Tai Ping Zhuang Bei)
Line 10 (From Guo Mao to Huo Qi Ying, and from Huo Qi Ying to Guo Mao)
Line 4 (From Bei Gong Men to Ma Jia Bao, and from Ma Jia Bao to Bei Gong Men)
Batong Line: (From Si Hui and Si Dong to Tu Qiao, and from Tu Qiao to Si Hui Dong and Si Hui)
Airport Express line: (From Dong Zhi Men and San Yuan Qiao to T3,T2,T1, and from T3,T2,T1 back to San Yuan Qiao and Dong Zhi Men).

Figuring out which side to take can be confusing if you do not speak Chinese. The map of the subway in the subway train is in Chinese characters as well as Pin Yin but outside waiting for the subways the wall map has only Chinese characters and there are no signs telling which direction the lines go. In this situation you can ask people around you.

Unless you know which side to take you will have to ask somebody for directions. It is usually a good idea to know one subway stop, like Yonghegong, Fuxingmen or Jianguomenwai which can help you ask somebody which way to go.

The Fuxingmen station is the only station that allows you to change lines.

Tickets are cheap, costing cost ¥2/ticket oneway, but remember to watch your purse and pockets! It is better for you if you have "Bus Card", because you donot need to queue to buy for the ticket.

The subway runs from 5:30 to 23:00.
