Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages (Beijing Wai Yu Da Xue) Bei Wai has about 800 foreign students, which some say makes it a challenge to practice your Chinese. "English is pervasive on campus," says one American student. "The only time I speak Chinese is when I get into a cab."
The average class size is about 16-18. Tuition is $1,050 per semester. Dormitory rooms are $4.50 per day for a double and $8.00 per day for a single; a single with a private bathroom costs $12 a day.
Address: 2 North Xisanhuan Avenue, Haidian District.

The Second Foreign Language Institute Cost: $3,000 a year, including housing. Unlike some universities, all teaching is conducted in Chinese, even at beginning levels. Classes are large, averaging around 25 students, and emphasize writing, usually requiring memorization of 30-50 characters a week. The campus is located in a remote area of Chaoyang District several kilometers due east of Jianguomenwai; on a weekday morning, it can take more than an hour and 15 minutes to get there, even from within the district. Some might consider the location might deter some people; others might view the seclusion as good for serious students.

BEIJING LANGUAGE AND CULTURE UNIVERSITY (BLCU) (formerly BLI, Beijing Language Institute) has the reputation of being the best place to study Chinese in Beijing. The problem this creates, of course, is that it attracts swarms of foreigners. "It's sort of like not being in China," said Damon Brennen, a recent University of Colorado graduate who plans to seek a job here once his Mandarin is good enough. But he says the school does not emphasize repetition and rote learning as much as some other schools: "I think they have a much better handle on how to teach Westerners."
The steady stream of students attracted by BLCU's reputation appears to have made its waiban (foreign office) considerably less service-oriented than those at some other schools. A foreigner who recently asked if he could observe a class was basically laughed at and told, in essence, that he could fork over some money first. (Other schools graciously complied with the request.) With the exalted reputation come slightly higher- than-average fees: $2,500 for a year's tuition, compared with $1,800-$2,000 for most other schools. Rates for housing are on a sliding scale ranging from $3.00-$4.00 a day for a double with a shared bath and few amenities to $17 a day for a single with A/C, bathroom and a phone.

NORTHERN JIAOTONG UNIVERSITY Located near Xizhimen north of the Beijing Zoo, this is one of five schools run by the Ministry of Railways to churn out the engineers who run the country's rail and highway systems. The campus is modern and well-landscaped; the Ministry has clearly put some money into the facilities here. Many of the foreigners at NJU are African or Middle Eastern students sponsored by the Chinese government to study engineering or computer science. Some have been here five years or more. Although it suffers from the same general lack of experience in teaching foreigners prevalent at other local schools, Jiaotong's classes are fairly small, at least at beginning levels (six to eight students per class). Teachers are friendly and willing to stay after class to answer questions. And the housing is cheap: the foreign students dorm costs $2.50 a day for a double or $5.00 for a single. The rooms are spare and chilly, with fluorescent lights and cement floors. These Spartan accommodations are offset by a foreign experts' building which until recently served as a hotel. Carpeting and curtains help insulate the rooms, and for $10 a day you get your own phone line, plus a TV and a private bath. (It's $5.00 if you share, but you may find these rooms uncomfortably small unless you're on very friendly terms with your roommate.) An added plus: because Jiaotong is under the Ministry of the Railway Ministry, the foreign office can help students book train tickets.

BEIJING INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (Li Gong Da Xue). Right across the street from Bei Wei, and built in the same drab grey-brick style. Again, the translation of the school's name may cause some confusion: Li Gong Da Xue is usually translated as Beijing Polytechnic, but the school is now officially called the Beijing Institute of Technology. Beijing Polytechnic University actually refers to Gong Ye Da Xue (literally, Beijing Industrial University), which is down in southeastern Beijing.
Students here say the focus is overwhelmingly on learning characters, with a little conversational practice thrown in as an afterthought. The school separates Asian and non-Asian students, but some Westerners enrolled there said the pace was uncomfortably fast even so. At $900 a semester, tuition is less expensive than most schools in Beijing. Housing is also cheaper than average: A two-student dorm room with no bathroom is $4.50 a day; a share with a bathroom is $8.00. All rooms have telephones. The school has about 80 foreign students.

BEIJING CALEDONIAN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE SCHOOL The advantage to this place appears to be that you can study for as little as a month at a time. The downside is that one month costs $1,240, putting the annual cost at $14,880. Considerably cheaper part-time courses meet two nights a week and once on Saturday afternoon; a three-month part-time course costs $300.

CET. The initials stand for China Educational Tours, the organization which formerly ran the program. Now it's run out of Washington D.C. by an organization called CET Academic Programs. There are two programs, one in Harbin, and one in Beijing at Capitol Normal University. The program costs $6,920, which includes tuition, housing, and "a meal stipend," according to the brochure. Shorter intensive or summer programs cost between $2,700-$3,900. About 800 Chinese students are studying foreign languages there; CET has about 60 foreign students. There are two "language pledge" dorms, where you sign an agreement to speak only Chinese. Some students actually get Chinese roommates, which is an unusual plus. In Beijing, contact Sarah Smith.

PRINCETON IN BEIJING This prestigious program costs $3,500 and lasts two months (June 27-August 23 this year). Application materials describe the course as being the equivalent of one full year of college-level Chinese, and from the way people talk about it, it may be. One American graduate of the program now living in Beijing said the pressure was so intense that he "hated almost every minute of it." He quickly added, however, that it helped his Chinese enormously. Others complain that teachers try to create a pressured atmosphere in which fear of academic failure is supposed to motivate students. This technique works well for undergraduates who need a passing grade, but does little for adults who aren't getting college credit for the course. The course is held at Beijing Normal University,
