Suburban Tours Weekend getaways are an ideal breath of fresh air for weary city dwellers. Most suburban districts are linked with Beijing by expressways, but tourism remains limited. Each month, we examine one of Beijing's outer districts and offer suggestions. This month, we focus on Shunyi. Beijing This Month tour team took a jeep recently to see exactly what is out in Shunyi and found out some interesting things. Example: Did you know Shunyi provides 8 million ducks a year to the capital city, more than 80 percent of the market? Yanjing beer brewery and the Erguotou distillery can be found here. Beijing's first golf course, the Beijing Country Golf Club, is here. Shunyi remains better known to Beijingers for its economic strength, its luxury villas and of course the airport. Tourism resource places Shunyi in the bottom three of Beijing's 18 districts and counties, above only Daxing and Tongzhou. But Shunyi nonetheless boasts modern leisure facilities including Beijing Eastern Garden International Conference Center on the Chaobai River. It also has a go-kart track. Beijing This Month looked around and suggests a few of the following tourism ideas. Transportation Shunyi is the first town north of Beijing passing Sanyuan Bridge (san yuan qiao) of the Third Ring Road. Get on the Airport Expressway and exit at Beigao Qiao and turn on the Jingshun Lu. Or, you can directly take Jingshun Lu from Sanyuan Bridge. Turn right at Kuliushu Traffic Circle (kuliushu huandao) to Shunyi. The 3,300,000-square-meter greenhouse in Yanhe Hi-te Muskmelon is rich in vitamins, protein, fat and minerals. The hall is an "official center of patriotic education" for primary and middle schools nationwide, but offers a much more interesting range of activities than the usual black-and-white photos and impenetrable captions. Add: West of Lisui Dalong Watersports Center Dalong offers water sports activities and it also has China's largest rubber dam. There are three islands " sun, moon and stars " in 14-square-kilometer area. There are ducks, geese, egrets, storks and gulls. Besides boating activities, visitors can also go fishing, barbecue and camping. A group of more than 20 persons obtain a 20 percent discount. Add: Henan Cun, east of Shunyi Shunxiang Go-Kart Club China's first go-kart track has Honda 50cc, 90cc and 100cc cars. The 800 meter circuit has a 10 meter-wide track, meeting international standards. Admission: 60 yuan (four rounds, 50cc), 80 yuan (four rounds, 90cc) Add: East of the rubber dam, Shunyi Beijing Country Golf Club The 1.6 million-square-meter Beijing Country Golf Club is the biggest of its kind in Asia. China's first golf course opened in 1990. Most visitors are representatives of overseas companies, diplomats from foreign embassies in Beijing and overseas Chinese. Free Beer Flows at Festival Folk gala shows, games stalls, beer drinking contests and "free beer" according to the organizers will be the highlight of the ninth Yanjing Beer Festival at Shunyi during June 6-8. "Yanjing is the brand of Shunyi people, of Beijing people and of Chinese people," says Li Fucheng, general manager of Yanjing Brewery Group Corporation. "The festival is a way of expressing thanks to all people who have supported Y Yanjing is China's most popular beer, ranking first in production and sales volume in China for five years running. The main activities of this year's festival will be launched on June 6 in the Shunyi Sports Center by a mass yangko dance and other folk activities.
